Having visited our practice you know that we care about our patients and about protecting your vision. We are also concerned about people around the world who lack access to vision care. Because of this, Complete EyeCare Center is participating in the World Sight Day Challenge.
The World Sight Day Challenge is a campaign coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight to raise funds for projects that provide vision care, local training and infrastructure support for people who are blind or vision impaired due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye exam and a pair of glasses.
Our practice will raise funds for the World Sight Day Challenge by matching the first $500 donated to this cause throughout the month of October.
Please join us in helping to give sight to people in need by making a donation of any amount. It’s easy to do. Just stop in our office, or donate online by clicking here. Sponsor Us
Together we can help transform lives. Here’s just one example:

Nlando was helped by Optometry Giving Sight
9 year old Nlando lives in a township in South Africa where the average family income is just $7 per day. Nlando struggled to see clearly until she received an eye exam and pair of glasses thanks to the support of Optometry Giving Sight. Having new glasses will enable her to learn at school. Because education can lead to freeedom from poverty, her future is likely to be much brighter.
Find out more about Optometry Giving Sight’s World Sight Day Challenge at www.givingsight.org. (You can see a video of a young man who had spent years in a school for the blind, and is now studying engineering in a regular school because his vision problem was corrected by a pair of glasses!)

Did you know?

Eye protection should be a major concern to all athletes
Approximately 72 percent of sports-related eye injuries occur in people younger than 25 years and approximately 43 percent occur in children younger than 15 years. (Source American Optometric Association.)
Nearly all of these injuries could have been avoided with proper eye protection. At age 23 I learned this lesson first-hand during a game of racquetball. After a trip to the emergency room and several stitches, we purchased sport goggles and have been advocates for protective eyewear ever since.
In outdoor sports, a laceration or poke to the eye isn’t the only thing we need protection from. Ultraviolet light exposure can also cause damage.
When properly prescribed, protective sports eyewear can actually enhance your athletic performance! So if you or a family member would like to return that volley better, improve a golf score, bag illusive fish & game, and be protected whatever the sport, talk to Dr. Olson about sports eyewear. Spring is here, along with a host of sports activities, so call Complete EyeCare Center today to schedule an appointment (319.385.9534).

Most of us are trying to get the most value for our dollar these days. That’s why we want to make sure you know about our Second Pair Savings. You’re entitled to 50% off your second pair of prescription eyewear when it’s purchased on the same day. Not quite ready yet? We also offer 20% savings if the second pair is ordered within 90 days of your initial prescription eyewear purchase.
With all the great frame styles and lens options available, this gives you the option of having more than one pair of glasses–perhaps one for work and another for weekends, one more dressy and the other funky, one rimless with another in colorful plastic, one pair with Transitions changeable lenses and the other without, one for everyday use and the other for enjoying a special hobby, like sewing, reading, or playing piano, more comfortably. The options are endless. Patients also find this is a great way to get a pair of prescription sunglasses or computer glasses.
You may be wondering if this is a limited time offer. We’re happy to say we’ve given our patients this option for years, because we pass savings we receive from our optical lab on to you.
Save 50% on a second pair, every day, when you purchase your prescription eyewear at Complete EyeCare Center. Kind of gives new meaning to the phrase “think twice!” You can explore some of your options right now by going to our products page to see our frame collections.

A significant number of visitors to our website find us from across the country because they are interested in Koali frames. They recognize excellent quality and design when they see it! We are currently working on a way to help serve those people who cannot visit our southeast Iowa office in person.
Koali designers are inspired by nature and their frames reflect the same organic, attractive lines–with names like Ginkgo, Begonia, and Fern. If you haven’t seen this frame collection, stop in and try them on for yourself at our downtown Mt. Pleasant office. You can also view images of them here.
Koali fans, did you know that there is a men’s line made by the same company called Öga? Öga, designed in Sweden, is inspired by contemporary architectural design. The collection is described as modern, geometric, and aesthetic. Some feature synthetic glass or wooden temples with mahogany, ebony, and oak tones. (Dr. Olson has two Öga frames himself.)
For those of you looking for modern drill mount or rimless frames with the same quality and production standards as Koali and Öga, you owe it to yourself to check out the Lightec frame collection. Made of surgical grade stainless steel they feature Alpha spring and screw free hinge systems. Lightec has light, contemporary frames for both men and women.
Our Eyewear Consultant will be glad to answer any questions you have about frames and lenses. Call our office at 319.385.9534 or stop in at Complete EyeCare Center today.

Koali, Oga, Lightec…these frame lines were featured at our annual Fashion EyeWear Event, but are available in our eyewear gallery throughout the year. By stopping in our office both men and women will find unique, fashionable frame designs inspired by the natural world. Some even feature real wood components. (You can view these collections from our Products tab.)
Once again, the Fashion EyeWear Event was held in conjuction with the Mt. Pleasant High School Interact Club’s See-Saw for Sight on May 9, 2009. Not only did they have fun, students were motivated by the knowledge that their efforts will help restore sight to the blind in India. The volunteers raised over $850 that will be matched several times by Rotary International. With the matching funds it is projected that their efforts will help another 270 of India’s afflicted, who will regain functional vision for work and daily life after having cataract surgery at a subsidized outreach clinic.
After learning of Rotary’s sight-saving clinic Dr. Olson and his family suggested the first Interact Club See-Saw for Sight event and have helped organize it each year. Complete EyeCare Center donated food, equipment, and radio time for the See-Saw for Sight event, and HyVee provided hot dogs. This local event, held annually at Complete EyeCare Center since 2006, has already helped over 1000 people.
Visitors to the dual events in May were offered free hot dogs, popcorn, beverages, and cookies, and twelve were door prize winners. Be watching for our next special event, to enjoy special savings, prizes and refreshments for yourself!

If there’s one way you can save your vision over your lifetime, it’s by wearing good quality sunglasses now. Whether it’s summer or winter, sunny or overcast, ultraviolet exposure can damage your eyes. Premature cataracts, the clouding of the lenses, and macular degeneration are the greatest concerns. UV damage has also been attributed to some eye growths and can affect the structures inside the eye.
When choosing sunglasses, cheaper is not better. Dark colored lenses without adequate UV protection can dilate your eyes allowing even more harmful light into the eye through your enlarged pupil. So don’t skimp on eye protection, especially for children, whose eyes are more sensitive. (Some studies estimate that 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs before age 18.) Sunglasses found on discount store racks may claim UV protection, but the triacetate material many of them are made of only absorbs about 40% of UV rays, and they often distort the light passing through them which can negatively impact vision and performance. We can show you the superiority of the optical quality polycarbonate and polarized sunglass lenses with 100% UV protection.
This March, during Save Your Vision Month, we’re encouraging you to upgrade your sunglasses. We’ve expanded our sunwear selection just as the weather begins to beckon us outside. So consider a new look and new protection for your eyes this year. It could save you from compromised vision or costly surgery in the future.

Sport-specific performance in sunglasses comes down to tint, which should filter enough of the right kind of light to reduce brightness and eyestrain, without filtering out what you actually need to see to perform well. Our Eyewear Consultants can help determine what lens colors will work best for you. Here are some general guidelines.
Yellow or Amber: Increases visual acuity, focus, and contrast in low light conditions.
Best for: Road, field, and trail. Shooting, fishing, tennis, racquetball, handball, indoor basketball.
Gray or green-gray: Cuts glare in bright light conditions, and preserves natural color perception.
Best for: Water and road. Cycling, all outdoor sports.
Copper or brown: Universal tints that improve depth perception, increase contrast, cut glare on sunny to partly cloudy days, and minimize eyestrain brought on by haze.
Best for: Road, trail, field, and water. Golf, fishing, baseball, cycling, hunting.
Rose or violet: Makes details pop when light is flat, especially against blue backgrounds.
Best for: Water and snow.
If you want to reflect certain color wavelengths, like screening blue or green for better visibility below the water line when fishing, ask about a mirrored coating instead of a tint. The best way to eliminate reflections and glare is to choose optical quality sunglasses that are polarized.
You’ll find a full range of options in our eyewear gallery. Be sure to check out Rudy Project and Maui Jim sunwear, which is particularly suited to performance sports. We can even design a pair of custom sunglasses to meet your specific needs.

If you’re serious about seeing and performing at your best, take a look at Rudy Project sunglasses. We have recently added the collection in our office. So whether your interests are biking, snow or water sports, fishing, racket sports, golf, or driving, they combine sport and style in a way that takes your needs into account.
First, they’re polarized to filter out reflected light, but they have dialed it down to 96% so you can still read the LCD screen on electronic gauges, your iPod, or phone. Next, they are available as photochromic so they’ll adjust from nearly clear to super dark depending on the lighting conditions you are in. They’re Rx-able so you can integrate your eyeglass prescription or remove the insert when you wear your contacts. A brow-hugging design keeps wind and glare at a minimum and sideshields can be snapped on for complete protection. Adjustable temples and nosepads allow the fit to be customized to your face, and hydrophilic rubber means they will stay put when wet. All the metal components are made of corrosion-fighting stainless steel. Not only that, they look good!
Rudy Project sunglasses were recently named Gear of the Year 2008 by an independent magazine. You don’t have to go far to find the best. Stop in to Complete EyeCare Center in downtown Mt. Pleasant to try them today.

Ever wished you didn’t have to wear glasses or contacts, but find the idea of refractive surgery a bit drastic or expensive? People who would like all the advantages of not wearing glasses or contacts during the day, but are reluctant to have refractive surgery (such as Lasik) are finding a solution with CRT at Complete EyeCare Center.
CRT stands for Corneal Refractive Therapy. With CRT the cornea, or outer surface of the eye, is reshaped each night using a specially designed rigid contact lens while you sleep. The lenses are removed in the morning and your vision is corrected! This means you don’t have to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day.
Among people who benefit from wearing CRT lenses while they sleep, are those who have dry eyes, because they do not have to wear traditional contact lenses that can contribute to dryness during waking hours. Those who work in dusty conditions or with fumes don’t have to worry about problems with contact lens irritation. Anyone who enjoys swimming or exercising and would love to work out without their glasses, yet still see clearly, would benefit as well. Emergency workers and others who face situations where they would be handicapped if their glasses were knocked off or contacts were dislodged, also appreciate freedom from typical corrective lenses.
Another benefit to consider is that CRT is reversible, so when near vision begins to change in your 40s, the correction can be adjusted. For Lasik patients these vision changes can mean that reading glasses are now necessary, but it’s possible that they could be avoided by a CRT patient using monovision.
Anyone who finds the idea of freedom from traditional vision correction appealing, or has thought about Lasik, should consider the benefits of CRT. Dr. Olson is only eye doctor in the Mt. Pleasant area to offer CRT. Call his office, Complete EyeCare Center at 319.385.9534, for an eye health exam and he will help you determine if CRT is a good option for you.

How can we not mention the recent craze to get frames like VP nominee Sarah Palin? It’s fascinating to see the celebrity phenomena impacting the eyewear industry. One thing it confirms is that frames are as much a fashion item as they are medical device. Gone are the days of not wanting to be seen wearing glasses. They are an accessory, and a means of conveying an image.
Palin’s frame features drill-mount linear shaped lenses and sleek gray-toned temples. Drill mounts appear practically “frameless” from the front because the entire lens is rimless and held by mounting screws at the bridge and temples. Her straight lens shape and frame size may not flatter all facial shapes, but it’s a great choice for Palin’s. We have several similarly styled drill-mount frames, with variations in color and shape to suit you. Our Eyewear Consultants can help you find the perfect frame so you look and see your best. We take into account what’s flattering to your face and coloring, the right size for your lens prescription, as well as your personal tastes, lifestyle and visual needs.
Complete EyeCare Center’s Eyewear Consultants also keep educated on eyewear trends through current trade journals, conferences, and regular meetings with eyewear industry representatives. Other celebrities setting recent trends in eyewear include Tina Fey, Amanda Peete, Cate Blanchett, and Jennifer Gardner.
